On the women's side, Coach Charli Turner Thorne has a mix of grade levels in her bag of local talent. Among the five graduates of Arizona high schools on the roster, it will be
Dymond Simon, a junior guard from
St. Mary's HS, that starts on the perimeter and will be caught up in the glare of the national stage spotlights.
Kayli Murphy, a junior forward/center, also from
St. Mary's, is recovering from a broken right hand, but is expected to make significant contributions when she returns to the line-up. And
Kate Engelbrecht will play a key role as a reserve guard; she's from
Catalina Foothills HS. Haley Parsons, a freshman guard from
Marana HS, and
Becca Tobin, a sophomore forward from
Cactus HS, are in the wings, waiting for their turn on center stage.
The women also got their season off to a good start with a 76-59 win over Cleveland State in the opening round of the pre-season WNIT tournament. They were 22-11 overall last season, and finished in third place in the PAC 10.
