Arizona Coaches Association Welcomes New President Mike
Brown of Greenway.

The end of 2006 marks the end of the Arizona Coaches Association presidency for me. I welcome Mike Brown as he heads up this organization for the next two years. I have worked with Mike as a coach, as well as on our ACA board, having coached his son in track. Mike will make a great leader for our association.

The 60th Year of the Arizona Coaches Association is shaping up nicely. We created a vision and input session on the goals of the ACA. The results given by the coaches were great and we are working on many components of the plan. Please continue to contact me with your thoughts, ideas and concerns as we make the ACA even better.

We are looking to honor the top 60 coaches in Arizona History at the Summer All Star games. Post your input at the website under current events. And plans are underway to relocate the Hall of Fame so that the public can learn about our great coaches. We also want to videotape coaches and save them for the website download as well, in order to preserve our past.

Instead of Banning Food Options, Teach Students About Nutrition

The Arizona Coaches Association is concerned about legislation that seeks to ban food options in Arizona under the guise that it will address the growing problem of childhood obesity. Unfortunately, such a simple approach may not produce the intended results and does not teach proper nutrition. Childhood obesity is a complex issue that must be addressed with nutrition and physical education, both at home and in school. We need to educate students about nutrition and fitness for life. Students need to make informed decisions by researching the facts. They need to be critical thinkers, which is a goal of our educational system. We want to educate the students about their health to make them responsible and accountable for their actions. We must teach a balanced approach to eating and living an active lifestyle to prevent obesity and obesity related illnesses. Since no one food or beverage is the cause of obesity, a ban will not work.
